Fossacesia is mobilizing to protect its coastline from erosion. Urgent construction sites are planned to secure the beaches, involving significant investments and collaboration with regional authorities.

Urgent intervention for coastal defense

The municipality of Fossacesia is accelerating efforts to protect its coastline from the relentless effects of erosion. Immediate measures are deemed essential to safeguard the beaches. The local administration is prioritizing the launch of construction sites to implement crucial coastal defense works.

This proactive approach aims to mitigate further damage and preserve the natural beauty of the shoreline. The urgency stems from the increasing vulnerability of the coast to natural phenomena. Securing the coastline is seen as a vital step for the environmental and economic future of the area.

The administration is working diligently to overcome any bureaucratic hurdles. The goal is to commence these vital operations as swiftly as possible. This commitment reflects a strong desire to protect a valuable natural resource. The long-term sustainability of the coastal ecosystem is at the forefront of these considerations.

Strategic planning and site identification

A significant step forward was taken with a recent meeting. Mayor Enrico Di Giuseppantonio, alongside councilors Danilo Petragnani and Umberto Petrosemolo, met with Marcello D’Alberto. He is the director of the Maritime Works Service for the Abruzzo Region. The purpose was to identify the ideal location for a loading area. This area is essential for the commencement of the construction site.

The meeting followed a technical inspection. This inspection assessed the current state of the coastal areas. Regional officials and the head of the municipal technical sector, Maria Palladini, were also present. This detailed survey helped pinpoint the operational zone. It will be situated in the southern part of the coastline, near the Darsena.

This identification of the operational area is considered a pivotal moment. It will unblock the planned interventions along various stretches of the coast. The strategic placement ensures efficient logistics for the upcoming works. It also minimizes disruption to the surrounding environment.

Investments in coastal reinforcement

Several significant investments have already been made to reinforce the coastline. Approximately 200,000 euros were allocated for the repair of breakwaters in the northern section, specifically in the Cavalluccio area. Further funds, totaling 300,000 euros, were dedicated to reinforcing breakwaters. These works targeted areas both north and south of the Trabocco Pesce Palombo.

Additionally, contracts have been awarded for works valued at 500,000 euros. These funds, sourced from the FSC (Fondo per lo Sviluppo e la Coesione), will be used in the Fuggitella beach area and near the Trabocco Punta Rocciosa. These investments demonstrate a clear commitment to addressing the erosion problem.

Among the most substantial projects, contracts have already been signed for works costing 1 million euros. These will be carried out in the stretch adjacent to the camper area, close to Fosso Mayer. This significant investment highlights the scale of the challenge and the determination to tackle it.

Provincial and regional collaboration for Via Verde

Further enhancing coastal protection, an additional project worth 1 million euros is underway. This initiative falls under the responsibility of the Province of Chieti. It focuses on the section opposite the former Fossacesia train station. The primary aim is to protect the Via Verde, a popular cycling and pedestrian path.

The executive project for this crucial intervention has recently received approval. The commencement of these works is now anticipated. This project is financed by the Abruzzo Region. It benefits from the support of regional councilor Umberto D’Annuntiis. The intervention is designed to secure the slopes and safeguard the Via Verde.

This collaborative effort between the province and the region underscores the shared commitment to preserving the coastal infrastructure. The Via Verde is a vital asset for tourism and local recreation. Its protection is paramount.

Future interventions and administrative steps

A further intervention, valued at 200,000 euros, is planned for the Levante area. This section is located in front of the boat launching and parking area for local fishermen. The administrative process for this project is currently in progress with the Region. A new agreement is expected to replace the previous one.

To facilitate the opening of the construction site and the necessary loading area, Mayor Di Giuseppantonio plans to seek cooperation from private landowners. Their collaboration is essential for allowing vehicle access and organizing the logistics of the construction work. This highlights the need for community involvement in such public projects.

The mayor emphasized the common challenges faced in public works. He expressed gratitude to regional councilor Umberto D’Annuntiis for the funds already secured. However, he stressed the need to identify additional financial resources. He also praised the councilor's efforts in securing funding for the Abruzzo coast.

Scientific evidence and ongoing commitment

Mayor Di Giuseppantonio highlighted the scientific evidence supporting the need for these interventions. Studies, including those conducted by ENEA (Agenzia nazionale per le nuove tecnologie, l'energia e lo sviluppo economico sostenibile), confirm the high vulnerability of Fossacesia's coastline. This scientific backing reinforces the urgency of the situation.

He also extended thanks to the Maritime Works Service of the Abruzzo Region, led by engineer Marcello D’Alberto. Their commitment and promptness in addressing the coastal erosion emergency were acknowledged. This collaborative spirit is crucial for effective environmental management.

The municipal administration reaffirms its dedication to expediting all necessary procedures. The objective is to initiate the works promptly. Protecting the coastline is recognized as a strategic priority. It holds significant importance for the territory's environmental, tourism, and economic well-being. The long-term vision is to ensure a resilient and thriving coastal environment for future generations.
